Very
high general and roadside API expected today
The Environmental
Protection Department today (Thursday) forecast that the Air
Pollution Index (API) later today would reach 85 to 135 for
the roadside stations, and 65 to 105 for the general ambient
stations.
"When the general API exceeds 100 and reaches the 'very
high' band, people with existing heart or respiratory illnesses
should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities. They
should also avoid prolonged stay in roads and streets with
heavy traffic when the roadside API exceeds 100," Acting
Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Yeung Mo-man
said.
Hong Kong
is currently under very still wind conditions. The unfavourable
meteorological conditions have led to the accumulation of
nitrogen dioxide emitted from motor vehicles, particularly
from diesel vehicles. Very high API readings were therefore
measured at some of the roadside and general stations.
Members
of the public can check the API readings for different locations
on 2827 8541 or from EPD's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/.
