Study
to review sewerage master plans
The Environmental
Protection Department is developing a comprehensive programme
to upgrade and expand the existing sewerage facilities for
Hong Kong to meet the new demands of the growing population
and the associated housing needs.
To identify the additional sewerage facilities required, seven
sewerage master plan review studies will be conducted, and
three of them were commissioned today (Friday).
At an
estimated total cost of $33 million, the three studies are
expected to be completed in 15 months. They will assess the
adequacy of the existing and committed sewerage facilities
in Central and East Kowloon, Tuen Mun, Tsing Yi, South Lantau,
Lamma Island, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau.
The assessments
will take into account the effect of additional population,
the need for improving the environment and also the control
of water pollution.
Upon completion
of the studies, a revised sewerage master plan will be formulated
providing the necessary additional sewerage facilities in
each of these areas.
