Convicted pollution cases in September
Heavy sentences
including hefty fines and jail sentence were handed down by
the courts in a number of pollution cases last month (September).
Chevalier (Construction)
Company Limited was fined $100,000 for causing the carrying
out of prescribed construction work without a valid construction
noise permit.
Under the Water
Pollution Control Ordinance, a man, Chan Pak-chi, was fined
$25,000 plus a jail sentence of 28 days suspended for two
years for discharging waste/polluting matter into the Victoria
Harbour (Phase II) Water Control Zone.
During the month,
a total of 153 convictions were recorded in courts for breaching
anti-pollution legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection
Department.
Of these cases,
43 were convictions made under the Water Pollution Control
Ordinance (WPCO), 30 under the Noise Control Ordinance (NCO),
53 under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance (APCO), 23 under
the Waste Disposal Ordinance (WDO) and three under the Ozone
Layer Protection Ordinance (OLPO).
The fines ranged
from $300 to $100,000.
