Construction of Suburban Police and Court Complexes in Melbourne

Project Details:
It was a trial run of waste minimisation programme on two suburban police and court complexes at Dandenong and Frankston, Melbourne; one of which included recycling and waste minimisation measures, while the other followed the traditional approach to handle on-site waste.

Waste Minimisation Measures Highlights:

Design for reuse

  • Purchase recycled concrete, bricks and paper for use

Raw material management

  • Accurately estimate and order the necessary amount of raw material required

Waste management

  • Separate waste materials on-site into bins to maximise reuse and recycling
  • Recycle use of demolition materials such as metals, roof tiles, bricks and structural steels
  • Record waste statistics
  • Review and discuss waste minimisation plan intervally

Education and training

  • Brief workers waste minimisation goals and their roles on waste reduction

Outcomes:

  • Total volume of waste reduced by 15%
  • Financial savings of 55% on waste removal costs
  • Over 33% of the total waste volume generated was recycled
  • Saving of 43% landfill space
