A renovation project to build a new corporate office and workshop on a previously conventional looking office building of which the structure, exterior intact and gutting were left while the whole interior was remodeled.

Planning for waste reduction

  • Design to maximise material reuse
  • Use of hand demolition to preserve materials for reuse and recycling

Waste management

  • Allocate areas to store items that intended for remodel
  • Store easily damaged materials properly
  • Serve unwanted piled studs as "free wood" for recycle use
  • Transport doors and interior windows to recyclers for reuse
  • Salvage items such as doors, casings, hardware and plumbing accessories

Outcomes:

  • Cost savings of approximately US$6,500
  • 42% recycling rate of materials
  • 24 tonnes of materials being recycled or salvaged
