Construction of Energy Resource Centre from an Old Gas Company Building

Project Details:
A redevelopment project to dismantle an old Gas Company building and to build an Energy Resource Centre that serves businesses and residents in the Los Angeles area and across the country.

Waste Minimisation Measures Highlights:

Design for reuse

  • Reuse of demolished materials such as bricks in the wall coverings, stairs and ceilings
  • Use of recycled newspaper to make up the wall paneling
  • Use of recycled wood to make floor
  • Use of recycled rubber to cover the parking lot
  • Use of recycled demolition materials such as weapons, submarine and airplanes to make steel frame, structural concrete and reflective wall

Waste management

  • Salvage materials that could not be reused to other developers

Outcomes:

  • Over 60% of demolition materials was incorporated into the new building
  • More than US$3 million saved by reusing materials and building upon a site already owned by the Gas Company
  • Demonstrated more than 60 resource-efficient technologies and materials in the construction of the ERC
