4.1.2 Aerial Photographs
   

The most recent colour aerial photographs at the time of the study, taken in January 1997, were acquired from the Lands Department. A total of 53 photos covering the whole territory were selected. The photos were taken from aircraft at an elevation of 20,000 feet with a camera lens of focal length 6 inches (0.5 feet), which translates to a scale of 1:40,000 (20,000 / 0.5) in the captured images. Detail information on the aerial photos are presented in Table 4.1b.

The photos were purchased as contact prints, a medium which was deemed more suitable for the study than colour dipositives because:

  • it is more amenable to handling and inspection in hardcopy form; and

  • it achieves better result from scanning due to more even contrast in the resultant scan.

A number of the aerial photos covering Lantau Island were found to be affected by cloud and haze. In this case, data sources other than the aerial photos were used for data reference.

Note: A total of 59 colour aerial photographs were purchased from the Survey and Mapping Office of the Lands Department. Of these, six were redundant (as marked by b) and therefore had not been used for ortho-rectification.
