The South East New Territories (SENT) Landfill at Tseung Kwan O, Junk Bay is an existing waste disposal facility in the South-east New Territories. In 2008, the SENT Landfill receives about 5,200 tonnes of wide variety of waste per day.
Based on predictions on waste arisings, the landfill will be exhausted in mid 2010's. If it closes, waste will have to be diverted to the NENT and WENT Landfills, this will increase the number of refuse collection vehicles transporting waste collected from the catchment of SENT Landfill through long travel distances to the NENT and WENT Landfills. This will not only cause additional environmental impacts (ie vehicular emissions, noise, traffic, etc) due to extra distances travelled but also increase the operating cost of the private waste collectors who are currently delivering their waste to the SENT Landfill. It is therefore important to provide additional landfill space at the SENT Landfill.
The contract arrangements, detailed design and construction of the Extension will take several years and so there is a high degree of urgency in establishing the engineering feasibility and environmental acceptability of extending the SENT Landfill.
ERM-Hong Kong, Ltd (ERM) has been commissioned by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to undertake the South East New Territories Landfill Extension - Feasibility Study (the Assignment) under the Agreement No. CE 10/2005. The Assignment commenced in August 2005 and was completed in 2010.
