“Ka Lung Court joined the Programme on Source Separation of Domestic Waste in 2006 and we’ve seen a big increase in the amount of recyclables that we collect. Waste paper has tripled, from 4,300 kg in October 2006 to 13,100 kg in March 2008. We are also collecting a lot more metals and plastics. This has helped us achieve our target of reducing domestic waste that needs disposal. Our high collection rate earned us a Bronze Award in the Competition on Source Separation of Domestic Waste 2007/08.”

Due to limited space in the refuse collection room and the bulky nature of plastics collected, residents have had to find imaginative solutions for storing recyclables. Homemade fishing nets are set up to store plastics because they are elastic and can store large quantities. This earned Ka Lung Court an Innovation Award in the Competition on Source Separation of Domestic Waste 2006/07.
